You should also look for this on your 6-point sockets. You'll see it called that on the expensive ones, but really what it means is the corners are milled out a little, so the wrench only contacts on the flats of the nut. Look for ones with "flank drive" or equivalent. What you really want is a good set of 6pt box ends, especially if you're primarily gonna be auto. If you had a bunch of odd nut and bolt shapes mixed on whatever you're wrenching on, I can see the appeal. I've never run in to a non 6-point nut on my vehicles, though, so. Between the marking and the slippage, they're really good at stripping and marring hex nuts. I wouldn't use them on any visible bolts - they tend to leave vertical marks on the nuts. 12pt and "universal" ends are OK if you need a lot of precision in how you place the wrench - working in tight spaces - and aren't really applying much pressure. If you buy lightweight wrenches, the jaws will also open and they'll round off as well. Same with 12-point wrenches, in my experience. If you're putting any torque on a bolt, it'll strip the corners right off. I have some, but they're only useful in limited circumstances. I'm no professional, but I do a bit of garage wrenching. I see this as a huge design flaw and was wondering what you thought about it.

I actually called the company and they said this is how it works, and they sent me a free standard 1/4" ratchet! Like I said, I have to use this on all of my 1/4" sockets in the particular kit I have. I have no idea why they designed it like this. How do you use this? It inserts from the BACK of the wrench, so when you put any pressure on the nut, it pops out the back of the ratchet, over and over. I have this too, in fact on my set it's a 1/4" and all of the smaller sockets are standard square drive, not gear-wrench type. There is a socket adapter, it looks like it's maybe a 3/8" and would let you use your through-ratchets with a normal square-hole socket.
